How to ensure AI literacy

As of February 2, 2025, organisations developing or using AI systems are required to take measures to promote AI literacy among their employees. They must ensure that their employees are ‘AI literate’. This means they must ensure that staff know and can do enough to use AI responsibly.

The AI Act does not specify the exact measures that must be taken. Anyone working with AI systems within an organisation or on its behalf should possess the necessary:

  • skills,
  • knowledge, and
  • understanding

of both the technical functioning of AI and its social, ethical, and practical implications. This is crucial because the use of AI systems can pose significant risks and have a substantial impact. On customers, end users, and others—especially when an organization relies on AI to make decisions about individuals.
